The American Dream (Game)

I’ve self taught myself some economics and I’m working on a banking simulation. It will show how the “American Dream” “works”. I will use parts of the city from “Techless Survival” and the jobs from “Inflation Scenarios” to create the game’s environment. You can take out a loan (mortgage) and buy a house, and spend the rest of your days working to pay off your debt. (Don’t forget the interest!) You can also be a consumer and buy stuff you don’t need! Your character will gain happiness when around others so don’t get depressed by working too much.

This is what the manage your banking account GUI looks like:

When you deposit money in a bank you gain a bit of interest every month from it. (It’s around 1% and it’s not really worth it because banks make SOO much profit by having your money stored in their vaults)  I could explain how banks loan money but I prefer to incorporate that in the game because it’s more fun for you to learn while playing a game.  If you want to know now watch this youtube video.

Roblox Titanic ‘Slip’ Badge

Read on to find out how I made the ‘Slip’ badge. Slipping is randomly determined every time you touch a brick at the stern. Each deck brick is named “Slip”.  A script is cloned into all the bricks named Slip.

1) The script first checks if the Round Percent is over a certain number.

(Although the Round Percent value is not accurate anymore due to  parts of the game script being deleted or remade, I still use Round Percent for other scripts to determine what part of the round the game is executing.)

The slip script first randomly chooses how far in the game it has to be math.random(78,89).
That means 79,80,81.. etc all the way to 89.

This is about the time the bridge is flooding to right when the first funnel falls.

If the game is 86% done and the number randomly chosen for you is 85, you won’t slip; but if that randomly chosen number was 87 then the script would move on to the next thing that determines if you slip.

2) A random number is chosen between 1 and 100.
chance = math.random(1,100)
example: chance = 23

3) A random number is chosen between 55 and 80.
percent = math.random(55,80)
example: percent = 58

4) If chance is more than or equal to percent then the player who touched that brick slips.
Script:
if chance >= percent then
–slip
–to slip you first have to tell the program what human is.
human.Sit = true
–in this case human is the humanoid of the person who touched the brick.
end

In this example chance is 23 and percent is 58.  For this person to slip, their chance value would have to be at least 58 so they are safe, for now.

Overall, there are many different combinations to determine what makes you slip and that’s what I think makes it a challenge.

And here’s what the script actually looks like:

Roblox Titanic Game Play Idea

Ever been the crew member with that fake gun wishing it could actually do something? With this update, it could!

I will add a GUI that allows the user to choose if they take damage from any tool.  If that option is set to yes, then players with weapons can kill them.  To encourage this to be set to on, you will get 1 Point if you die.  To counter this, it will take 2 Points from the killer so it doesn’t happen all the time. (This can also be used to get rid of Point inflation)

If this idea doesn’t sound good, it won’t affect you at all.  Just switch the setting to “no” so you can’t get killed by anyone else.

Game Projects 2012

List of all my games and what I plan to do with them (As of April 10th, 2012)

Roblox Titanic: Keep updating until the 10-15 major updates I have left are done.

Survive the End of Roblox: Pretty much done. Meaning there is still a small possibility I will update it.

Roblox Hiking: Pretty much done.

Life After People: Done, but I might make another game that uses more efficient scripting that might replace it.

Paint Em Dead: I will update the maps to be on terrain.

Roblox Titanic II: Done, I don’t want to add all the features the main game has.

Disaster Warfare: I might remake the map to see if it can get popular with a better looking map.

Disaster Ship: I plan to finish ASAP.

Classic Survive the End of Roblox: Done

Inflation Scenarios: I want to finish all jobs and make a lot more features but the project is so big already and it draws me away.  I would really like to have a popular game about an important subject such as inflation.

Destroy Terrain: Done

Team City: I am still thinking how to make this game fun and educational at the same time.

Techless Survival: I want to finish this but the project size is huge already and I am waiting for roblox to allow more bricks per map with less lag.

ArrangeBlox: 7 levels are done.  I want to complete the tools and more maps, but not very many people even know about the game.

Scale of Planets and Stars: I might make another model of something, but it’s pretty much done.

Drive off a Mountain: I might change the debris script for less lag and make it driving off terrain mountains.

Roblox Inception: Project on hold until the Roblox Universe update

Hiking Trail Tycoon: I don’t know why I haven’t been able to finish this. I don’t think I will because it is not a very fun concept.

OBBY:  I feel no one will play it if it ever gets done.

Biome Disasters: Done

Unsafe Ground: I’m having trouble spawning models on top of a certain brick color that was randomly generated instantly before.

Flatlands: My brother will get BC eventually and I can remove the place.

Survive the End of Roblox Test Server: Unless I make more updates to STEOR I will replace this place slot with something else.

Fly a UFO: I want to turn this into a “quick” game where you get missions from your alien master to abduct humans from a near by city without being shot down by authorities from the city.

Roblox Titanic Test Server: Used to test updates for Roblox Titanic.

Future of Video Games and Education

The past few years on Roblox has encouraged me that game design and game development  is what I want to do as a career.  In the future, I believe that games can be educational and should become a major part of teaching.

Right now the typical parent probably thinks all video/computer games are bad, but that is not true!  Video games can be a major source of information and a fun way to learn.  Roblox has already taught hundreds of thousands at least one of the following: currency trade, game design, game development, programming, graphic design, engineering, architecture.  Why stop there?

In many high school classes there’s always people on electronics playing games during class (Temple run, angry birds, fruit ninja, etc.)  Imagine more games being developed for educational purposes.   For example in a social studies class: Instead of reading a text book and mindlessly taking notes, how about play a game where your character is actually in that period of history.  You control where your character goes and learn about history as the game-years go by.

I see people uninterested in so many subjects because a bunch of homework, quizzes and tests take away all the fun of actually learning the subject to learn it.  And what happens after the test? Most people forget about the subject matter because it no longer applies to what they want or need to do.  I believe games can change that and inspire people to learn more about a subject.

Imagine a game about chemistry where you choose an element to react with another element.  It would be a fun way of finding out which elements react with others.  This would also get rid of teacher’s hassle of setting and cleaning the lab up.

Imagine a game that teaches people about how World War I started. You could be the leader of any of the many countries involved and be presented with what the other countries’ leaders are doing, then take action and see the reaction.   That’s much more imaginative and much more fun  than taking notes on who did what to start the war.  The game would also help you remember the facts longer because it’s more vivid in your memory.  Playing a game instead of writing down something has a much more vivid affect on you.

Fun educational games can be made and it will excite more people into learning about anything!

Roblox Titanic Interior Redesign

With this update all decks will be the same height because as I was building the original outline back in 2009, I didn’t even pay attention to dimensions.  Also, the boiler room is above the water level to get rid of the “glitch” where water is ALREADY ABOVE the boiler room even before it starts to sink.

Also with this update, the ship is ~30 studs thinner.  The ration of how long to how wide Roblox Titanic is, is now the real Titanic length to width ratio.

1-26-12: New bridge. Much more realistic

1-27-12 – New grand stair case under construction

1-29-12 -Still working hard to get it finished
